What your IP address tells a website

The one piece of information every site you visit receives

Your public IP address is the address your internet provider gives your connection. Every website and app you use sees it, because it is where they send their replies. It is not the address your device has on your home network: your router sits in between and shares one public address across every device behind it.

From that address a site can work out which provider you use and roughly where you are, usually to the city. That is how streaming services apply regional catalogues and how fraud checks spot a login from an unusual country. A VPN replaces your address with the VPN provider’s, so sites see its network and location instead of yours.

IPv4
Four numbers from 0 to 255, like 203.0.113.42. There are only about 4.3 billion, so providers share them between customers.
IPv6
Eight groups of hex digits, like 2001:db8::1. There are enough for every device to have its own public address.
ASN
The autonomous system number that identifies your provider’s network on the internet, like AS15169 for Google.
Reverse DNS
A hostname linked to an address through a PTR record. Providers often use one that names the connection type or region.

Usually, for IPv4. Your router shares one public IPv4 address between every device on the network, so your phone and laptop show the same one here. With IPv6 each device normally gets its own public address.

Most networks now run both. Websites that support IPv6 usually connect over it, and older ones fall back to IPv4. If only IPv4 shows here, your provider or router has not enabled IPv6.

Note the address shown here, connect to your VPN, then select Check again. The address and network should change to the VPN provider’s, and the location should move to the server you picked. If nothing changes, traffic is not going through the VPN.

IP location comes from databases that map address blocks to places, not from GPS. It is usually right about the country and often right about the city, but mobile carriers and some providers route traffic through a regional hub, so it can be a city or more away.

Most home connections get a dynamic address that can change when the router restarts or the lease runs out, sometimes after days or weeks. Mobile networks change it much more often. A static IP has to be requested from your provider.
