What is ping & how it works

Measuring reachability and latency to any host

Ping is the simplest network diagnostic there is: it sends small packets to a host and measures how long they take to return. That round-trip time (RTT), together with how many packets come back at all, tells you whether a server is reachable and how responsive the path to it is.

This online ping tool runs the test from our servers to the host you enter, so you can check reachability and latency even for machines you can't reach from your own network. Use it to confirm a server is up, compare latency between hosts, and spot packet loss that points to a congested or failing link.

Latency (RTT)
The round-trip time for a packet, in milliseconds. Lower is better; spikes indicate congestion or distance.
Packet loss
The percentage of packets that never return. Anything above zero on a stable link signals a problem.
ICMP
The protocol ping uses. Some hosts and firewalls block ICMP, which can make an up server look unreachable.

For most uses, under 50 ms is excellent and under 100 ms is fine. Real-time applications like gaming and VoIP are the most sensitive to latency and jitter.

Many servers and firewalls block ICMP echo (ping) requests for security. The host can be perfectly healthy over HTTP while ignoring pings, so treat a timeout as inconclusive rather than proof it's down.

Lost packets mean some data never completed the round trip, usually due to congestion, a failing link, or an overloaded host. Sustained loss above 1–2% will noticeably degrade connections.
