What is WHOIS & how it works

Registration metadata behind every domain name

WHOIS is the public directory that maps a registered domain name to the administrative facts behind it — which registrar sold it, when it was created and when it expires, which nameservers it delegates to, and the status codes that lock or unlock changes. Every generic and country-code registry publishes this record so anyone can confirm a domain is real and see how it is managed.

This tool queries the domain's authoritative registry (or the registrar of record) and normalises the raw WHOIS text into readable fields. Because of GDPR and registry privacy policies, personal registrant contact details are often redacted, but the registrar, key dates, nameservers, and status codes remain visible and are the fields that matter most for diagnostics.

Registrar
The ICANN-accredited company that sold and manages the domain registration (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap).
Registry
The organisation that operates the top-level domain (e.g. Verisign for .com) and holds the master record.
EPP status codes
Flags like clientTransferProhibited that control whether a domain can be transferred, updated, or deleted.
