What is domain expiry & how it works

How a domain's registration term ends and renews

Every domain is registered for a fixed term and carries an expiry date in the registry. If it lapses without renewal, the domain stops resolving, then enters a grace and redemption period, and can eventually be released for anyone to register — taking your website and email down with it.

This checker queries live WHOIS data to read the registrar, creation and expiry dates, nameservers and status codes for a domain. It calculates the days remaining, shows where you are on the registration timeline, and flags risks such as a missing transfer lock or unsigned DNSSEC.

Expiry date
When the current registration term ends and renewal is due.
Redemption
A costly recovery window after expiry before the domain is released.
Transfer lock
clientTransferProhibited blocks unauthorised transfers of the domain.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about domain expiry
5 Q&A

A domain's expiry date is when its current registration term ends. Unless it is renewed, the domain stops working and eventually returns to the open market.

It first stops resolving, then enters a grace period where you can still renew normally, followed by a redemption period with a steep recovery fee, and finally it is deleted and released for others to register.

Renew well before expiry — ideally 30 to 90 days out — and enable auto-renewal. This avoids any lapse in DNS or email and the high cost of redemption if a renewal is missed.

The expiry date, registrar, nameservers and status codes are read from live WHOIS/RDAP records for the domain, so they reflect what the registry currently publishes.

Registrant contact details are often hidden by privacy protection or GDPR redaction. Registration and expiry dates remain public, so expiry monitoring still works even when contact info is masked.
