What is a MAC address & how it works

Vendor prefixes and the bits that matter

A MAC address is the 48-bit hardware address of a network interface, written as six hex pairs such as 02:1a:4b:3c:5d:6e. The first three bytes are the OUI, which identifies the vendor, and the last three identify the individual interface.

Two bits in the first byte matter: the multicast bit must be 0 for a normal interface, and the locally administered bit marks addresses assigned by software rather than burned in at the factory. Random addresses here set that bit, so they can never clash with real hardware; the vendor-style mode instead uses well-known virtualisation OUIs with a random device half.

OUI
Organisationally Unique Identifier: the vendor prefix in the first three bytes.
Locally administered
Second-lowest bit of the first byte set; safe for VMs and testing.
Unicast
Lowest bit of the first byte clear; required for a device address.

How to use this tool

Generate MAC addresses in four steps
1
Choose a mode
Pick fully random (locally administered) or a vendor-style OUI.
2
Pick a format
Separate bytes with colons, hyphens, Cisco-style dots, or nothing.
3
Set the quantity
Generate one address or a batch for provisioning or test data.
4
Copy or download
Copy the addresses or download the list.

Not in random mode: it sets the locally administered bit, and real factory-assigned addresses never have it set. Vendor-style addresses use real OUIs, so keep them inside isolated test networks.

Linux and macOS use colons (02:1a:4b:3c:5d:6e), Windows uses hyphens (02-1A-4B-3C-5D-6E) and Cisco uses dotted groups (021a.4b3c.5d6e). They are the same address.

On Linux: ip link set dev eth0 address 02:1a:4b:3c:5d:6e (bring the link down first). Hypervisors such as VMware, VirtualBox and KVM let you set it in the VM’s network settings.

For privacy. Modern iOS, Android and Windows use a locally administered random address per Wi-Fi network so devices cannot be tracked across networks.
