What is a cron expression & how it works

The five fields that schedule a Unix job

cron is the Unix scheduler that runs commands at fixed times. Each line in a crontab has five time fields followed by the command: 30 2 * * 1 /usr/local/bin/backup.sh runs a backup at 02:30 every Monday.

Each field accepts a number, * for every value, ranges (1-5), lists (1,15) and steps (*/10). Jobs run in the server's time zone with a minimal environment, so use full paths and redirect output to a log to see what happened.

*/15 means every 15 units; 1-5 is a range; 1,15 is a list.
Day OR rule
If both day fields are set, the job runs when either matches.

Run crontab -e, paste the line (schedule plus command) on its own line, save and exit. Check it with crontab -l.

The server’s local time zone, which on many servers is UTC. Check it with timedatectl or date.

Usually the environment: cron has a minimal PATH, so use absolute paths to commands and files. Also check the script is executable, and log output with >> /var/log/job.log 2>&1 to see errors.

Use */5 * * * *. Steps divide from the start of the range, so it runs at :00, :05, :10 and so on.

Shortcuts supported by most cron implementations: @hourly, @daily, @weekly, @monthly, @yearly, and @reboot to run once at startup.
