What is a Base64 image & how it works

Turning embedded image text back into a file

Images are often embedded as Base64 text: in HTML and CSS data URLs, JSON API responses, email bodies and database fields. The text is the image's bytes encoded with 64 safe characters, usually prefixed with a data URL header naming the image type.

This tool decodes that text back into the original image in your browser, shows a preview with its format, dimensions and size, and lets you save it as a normal image file. Paste the complete data URL, including the data:image/…;base64, prefix, so the image type is known.

Data URL
data:image/png;base64,… embeds a file directly in HTML or CSS.
MIME type
The image/png or image/jpeg part that tells the browser how to decode it.
+33% size
Base64 text is about a third larger than the original bytes.

How to use this tool

Convert Base64 to an image in four steps
1
Paste the data URL
Paste the full string starting with data:image/png;base64, (or jpeg, gif, webp).
2
Convert
Decode the text; the image type is read from the data URL header.
3
Check the preview
Confirm the image looks right and review its format, dimensions and file size.
4
Save the image
Save the previewed image as a file to use anywhere.

5 Q&A

Yes. The tool reads the image type from the prefix, so paste the full data URL, e.g. data:image/png;base64,iVBOR…. If you only have the raw Base64, add the prefix for its type: iVBOR is PNG, /9j/ is JPEG and R0lGOD is GIF.

The string may be truncated, contain stray spaces or line breaks from copying, or encode something other than an image. Check that it starts with a known signature, such as iVBOR for PNG or /9j/ for JPEG.

No. Decoding and preview happen entirely in your browser.

Raster formats your browser can display, such as PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, BMP and AVIF. SVG data URLs (image/svg+xml) are not accepted.

Save the Base64 (without the data: prefix) to a file and run base64 -d image.txt > image.png on Linux or macOS.
